Original Neighborhood Partnering Program Application Summary
In Zilker Residents' Words
"Fairy Alley is a magical place that makes me feel calm and happy. It is a little bit of unexpected joy and is one of the things that make Austin a good place to live. It is not a busy roadway and is used mainly by pedestrians who live in the neighborhood. I would be very sad to see it removed and I don't think doing so would make the area any safer."
"Fairy Alley is a treasured part of our neighborhood and part of what makes us unique. It represents our free expression. There is nothing to gain by removing the art, and plenty to use."
"Fairy Alley has existed for at least a decade (maybe more?). It is a staple of the Zilker neighborhood. It's a beautification effort, one that exudes magic and wonder. It has become a rite of passage for neighborhood children (of all ages!) to add to the decorations. It is part of the fabric of the area. It causes no harm. Please protect this magically alley."
"I think it's a whimsical place and is totally in line with the '04 vibe. It's the part of keep Austin weird that everyone loves!"
"I think it is a magical, whimsical place of interest with in our fantastic little neighborhood. It lifts my spirits whenever I walk through it."
"Please save this wonderful and whimsical neighborhood art! I live down the street and the delight it brings to children and adults alike is exactly what we need in this world of uncertainty and pain! Please keep This art alive! "
"as we all know, all things "Austin" are slowly (or quickly) disappearing - it would be nice to stop some of this from happening .... keeping Fairy Alley would be a good start."
"What is the destruction of the art in this alley achieving? This is a section of roadway that gets more pedestrian traffic and kids wanting to be in Fairy Alley than any amount of vehicular traffic. Why not just close it off as a pedestrian path with limited vehicular access? Make it a "living streets" project or whatever. Just reclassify it."
"It’s a lovely little piece of joy in our neighborhood."
"Fairy Alley is a neighborhood gathering place and Austin relic. Appreciating that Abbott’s order seeks to remove particular street art, the art on Fairy Alley does not communicate specific messaging that could be interpreted with bias to a particular community. Removing this artwork will not positively impact the neighborhood community; allowing it to remain in its organic form is warranted as it causes no harm to the community nor impacts the city."
"This is NOT what our elected officials should be spending time on! This is not a public safety issue and should remain as it is without interference."
"I love Fairy Alley. I bicycle through it almost everyday and I also bring visitors down to see it. It's a welcome and whimsical area and I don't think it's ideological or political at all! It's a pleasant upgrade to an otherwise bland alley. It makes people feel good. Our idiot governor is so paranoid it's pitiful! Save Fairy Alley!!"
"It’s part of what makes Austin special! Please don’t remove it. We love walking our kids through Fairy Alley! "
"Fairy Alley is rarely driven but often enjoyed as a walking road because of the mural. Our neighborhood would diminish in value without Fairy Alley. "
"Would love to see the paint rehabbed and maintained"
